The instructions suggest you fill and dump the water a few times to clean out the filters, etc.. Our family loves the fresh, clean, cold water at our house.

I Can Help You Can Fix It!

Thanks for the great info. I too would like to connect a reverse osmosis system to my refrigerator water system but the sites online were all very different with the details about whether or not it would work. Looking forward to purchasing my ispring and giving it a shot! I also have an iSpring reverse osmosis system 5-stage which follows a softener and an iron filter on my well water. The water is chemically perfect. It has removed all the Sodium that was exchanged in the softener.

It has also removed the 10ug of Arsenic III that comes from the well. It tastes like the kind of water we used to get from the Mountains in Colorado. How often do I now need to change the refrigerator filter? They recommend every 6 months on municipal water. But we feed the fridge from the iSpring system. We use the fridge water mainly for drinking its cold and the tanked RO water for cooking.

Sorry for the confusion. The water line for the refrigerator was the same size at the outflow for the reverse osmosis system so just connected the outflow on the reverse osmosis filter system to my refrigerator water line. I was mostly concerned as to whether or not there would be enough water pressure from the RO system to push the water through the fridge and water dispenser.

I found it worked just fine! Do you have to use the reservoir tank for the RO system when hooking directly to the refrigerator? Just filter the water going to fridge only. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks and great article! The excess water still needs to be dumped into the sink drain so we placed it under our sink. The drawback of RO is that it creates a lot of wastewater through the process so that needs to go somewhere. You can buy a pass-through filter that does not have the filtering elements inside when the refrigerator is hooked up to a reverse osmosis system.

It comes with the parts as advertised, but it doesn't come with nor does it imply that it came with a compression nut, sleeve and insert to hook up to the refrigerator.

There was plenty of hose, the "T" and valve hookups went on quickly and with no leaks, it is simply the fact that the kit feels incomplete, at least in my eyes, and that is why I chose to rate this kit as "okay" and not outstanding. I drilled a hole to run the lines The RO Input water line, illustrated between "X" and "A" on the Icemaker Kit Connection Diagram and the filtered Refrigerator Icemaker water feed line, shown after the Tee fitting between "H" and "Z" on the same diagram through the cabinet wall and behind my dishwasher to the RO system located underneath my kitchen sink.

I used a new steel braided line to run from the spigot towards the RO system http: In addition to that I also installed a ball valve identical to the one that comes with the kit that I'm reviewing on the RO side of the Compression Elbow fitting to be able to turn off the water feed without having to pull out the refrigerator to turn off the spigot behind it. The RO filters will need to be changed eventually and it will be a pain to have to pull out the refrigerator to turn off the input water feed. The ball valve is equivalent to this item http: In Hindsight, It would've been easier and cheaper to just build an entire new line from the spigot to the input untreated water feed to the RO system and install a ball valve inline.

I would've installed the ball valve on this line and have it accessible near the RO system to kill the input feed when it came time to change the filters. Why did I do this? I installed a new faucet that came with integrated supply lines http: So far, so good.

I would love to see APEC include instructions even if just an optional install instruction available on their website for utilization of the refrigerator Icemaker spigot for those homes that have them with this Icemaker kit heck, the RO system manuals too honestly. And for reference, I just heard the ice come crashing down in my icemaker the one in my refrigerator, I am not using a standalone , so I'm lucky that my system provides enough pressure for my Icemaker to work. All things considered, the price was about what I would have paid for the shutoff and tee connector at the hardware store, so I ended up getting the PEX I needed anyway for free by buying this kit.

That is, unless your refrigerator is very close to where the RO unit lives. Once the PEX is fished below the floor and back up again, there wouldn't be enough to allow me to move my refrigerator if I needed to including to check for leaks.

Thinking more about it, since APEC is big on color-coded PEX for installing their systems, I also think it would have been a good idea to have made this kit a different color, to make it easier to tell which line is going to your ice maker, and which is going to the faucet. The complaints are pretty minor. Overall, it's a decent value, and having all the parts makes installation very simple. This line, adapter, and valve worked great for me. It took about 5 minutes to install onto my Apec filter system under the sink and run it to where my new fridge was going to go.

I had actually wasted money and had a plumber come and run a water line from under the sink to the fridge prior to buying the filter system, so I already had the path clear.

Commonly Asked Questions or FAQs Regarding Reverse Osmosis Systems

If you don't have a clear line path to your fridge, it will take longer to drill holes and run the line. Installing the line itself is quite simple. You just turn off the filter system, cut the line to the faucet, add in the T-adapter and a short piece of the included water line you'll just have to cut off a short piece of the line you receive with this kit , attach the valve, then run the rest of the water line from the valve to the fridge. The refrigerator installation guy from Sears where I ordered my fridge had the rest of what was needed to connect this line to the fridge.

  4. If you're doing that yourself, you'll need a nut, one of the plastic washers for these plastic lines, and some plumbers tape for that connection. You could use this to plumb a coffee pot, ice machine, etc. We installed out RO system under the kitchen, with access from outside the house, so it doesn't sit under the sink, but rather in the crawl space area and we can change the filters from outside.

No matter what happens, we wont get drips in the house and access is easy from outside with a door installed over the installation. That is a bit of overkill, but we love having the system out of the way and then attached it to a sink faucet as well as our refrigerator, so we get fantastic ice and drinking water and the system just puts the waste water outside, into a garden bed we didn't want to penetrate our sewer line.

I hope that helps, all the hookups work well and there are not drips. One person found this helpful.
